Dark Phoenix rough sketches

Rough doodles I did of a Dark!Phoenix, tinkering with the designs already given in the art book for Layton vs Wright. I love how almost all of them have Phoenix facing the same direction. Most of the design draws from the second uncoloured sketch of Phoenix (the way the coat tapers down in the back, the ruffly sleeves, the cravat), but I took a lot from the coloured sketch of Dark!Phoenix, too, such as the way the lapels on his coat look.  You can only really see it in one picture, but he's wearing a shirt with a collar (the cravat is clip-on). The badge pinning his cravat on I haven't really decided what it would look like. I'm on the fence if it's like the red glass gem at the heart of the prosecutor's badges (as sometimes I did doodle him with one), or if it looks rather like a defence attorney's badge.

This is the first time I've ever actually drawn Phoenix. His hair is really hard to draw. Well, the first time after my initial sketch/doodle of his design, which is on a page with Athena's original design and Apollo's. I really liked the idea of him having playing cards, as shown in one of the artbook sketches, but since hands are really hard to draw, only one of the pictures here actually has them.

Oh, and to explain the "Rai" in the top... it's derived from "Ryuuichi", which most people who don't actually know what "ryuu" would be said like would say "rai-you" (it's more like... "ri-you" and for the most part, is actually closer to being just one syllable; This I'm sure about because the Hiragana characters for "Ryu" are Ri and Yu and three years of Japanese class in high school were not wasted on me). I think the "Dark" counterparts would be essentially mirror images of them in attitude, and I think they'd probably have different names to go with them just to show they're different, and so that's why that's there. Mostly that's just an excuse to use "Coco" for Athena because her Japanese name, Kokone, is way too much fun to say.

I doodled the hand just to draw what the shirt sleeves look like. And speaking of things I've never drawn before, I've never drawn masks before I started these doodles, either. Or outfits like these. Or men, really.

I'll probably trace and colour one of these eventually. :\
